Music plays a large role in student life at Concordia, as an area of study and a mode of expression. The music curriculum includes courses in music theory and composition, history and literature, church music, music education, vocal and instrumental techniques, conducting, private lessons in voice, piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar and all band and orchestra instruments, plus a full range of ensembles. The faculty includes some of the finest artist-teachers in the Twin Cities.
The Buetow Music Center features a 500-seat auditorium; three rehearsal rooms for choir, band, and chamber ensembles; 16 private practice rooms; four organ practice rooms; two electronic MIDI labs, including SMARTMUSIC technology; 16 faculty offices/studios; and a three-manual concert organ designed by Hermann Schlicker. Concordia became an all-Steinway piano school in 2002.
