The Broadway musical, Pajama Game, was based on a 1953 novel 7 1/2 Cents written by Richard Bissell. With music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, the story deals about labor relations at a pajama factory. The workers demand of a 7 1/2 cent pay raise gets refused by management. Babe Williams becomes the workers spokesperson. Meanwhile, Sid Sorokin, the new superintendent falls in love with the leader of the union grievance committee, Babe Williams.

The original Broadway production of the musical opened up on May 13, 1954, at the St. James Theatre. It was revived in 1973, and again in 2006 by The Roundabout Theatre Company. The original production was opened at the London Coliseum on October 13, 1955, and ran for 588 performances.

The Pajama Game won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1955 as well as the Best Revival of a Musical in 2006. It included songs and dances that became musical theatre standards, including “Steam Heat” and “Hernando’s Hideaway.” The show is a perfect choice for high schools and community theatres with many featured roles.
